Why Do My Ring and Pinky Fingers Go Numb?
Numbness and tingling in the ring and small fingers, especially with the elbow bent for extended periods (like on the phone or sleeping), is often cubital tunnel syndrome — compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes behind the elbow, the same nerve responsible for the "funny bone" sensation.
Causes & Symptoms
Prolonged elbow bending, leaning on the elbow, prior elbow injury, or simply anatomic narrowing of the tunnel the nerve travels through can all contribute. Symptoms include numbness/tingling in the ring and small fingers, worsening with elbow flexion, and in more advanced cases, hand weakness or muscle wasting between the fingers.
Diagnosis & Treatment
Diagnosis is often clinical, sometimes confirmed with a nerve conduction study. Nonsurgical treatment includes activity modification and night splinting to keep the elbow straighter during sleep. Nerve glide exercises are sometimes beneficial. When symptoms are more severe or don't improve, surgery to relieve pressure on the nerve — sometimes with repositioning of the nerve — is effective at preventing further nerve damage and improving symptoms.
